Mystery Science Theater 3000 začínal jako lokálně vyráběný pořad stanice KTMA v Minnesotě, brzy si ale získal popularitu. Přesunul se na Comedy Central (původně Comedy Channel) a odtud na Syfy. Po osmnáctileté pauze se posádka Satellite of Love vrátila v roce 2017 a dvě série běžely na Netflixu. V roce 2021 si produkce spustila vlastní streamovací službu The Gizmoplex, kde si na béčkových filmech smlsává dál. V roce 2026 seriál znovu oživila společnost Rifftrax se čtyřmi dalšími epizodami.

Za ta léta se v pořadu vystřídalo několik „pokusných subjektů“: Joel Robinson, Mike Nelson, Jonah Heston a Emily Connorová, a spolu s nimi jejich roboti Tom Servo, Crow T Robot a Gypsy (dnes GPC) — všichni vystavení příšerným filmům zásluhou celé řady šílených vědců včetně doktora Claytona Forrestera, jeho matky Pearl a nejnověji Kingy Forresterové.
