Když populární fantasy MMORPG vypne servery, ocitne se vůdce jedné z gild, kostlivý mág Momonga, přenesený do skutečného fantasy světa a uvězněný v těle svého avatara. Do neznámého světa se přesunula i pevnost jeho gildy a NPC postavy, které v ní žijí, získávají vědomí a vzhlížejí k Momongovi jako ke svému svrchovanému vládci — inu, k overlordovi. S rozsáhlými znalostmi magie a s mocnými fanatickými přisluhovači, kteří mu plní každé přání, hraje Momonga roli zlého vládce dál — až do té míry, že ovládnutí tohoto nového světa mu nepřipadá zase tak nelákavé.
