Příběh předchází chaosu, který propuká v Togenkyu, svaté zemi, kde kdysi lidé a démoni žili pospolu v míru a dobře spolu vycházeli. Někdo se ale pokusil pomocí spojení chemie a magie ze starobylého svitku vrátit život Gyumaovi, superdémonovi a jednomu z pěti bohů vládnoucích nebesům. Genjo Sanzo, sanzoboshi neboli mnich nejvyšší hodnosti, je povolán do paláce Shayou Choan. Dostane za úkol vydat se do západní země, kde chaos začíná, odhalit, kdo za rostoucími nepokoji stojí, a zastavit je. Na cestu s ním mají vyrazit Son Goku, Sha Gojyo a Cho Hakkai. Sanzo s nimi zprvu nesouhlasil, protože všichni tři jsou démoni – i když každý z nich má v sobě kus člověka, který ho udržuje při zdravém rozumu.
