Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (DS9) se soustředí na dobrodružství kapitána Benjamina Siska ve 24. století na vesmírné stanici Deep Space 9 — základně u ústí stabilní červí díry na samém okraji prozkoumaného vesmíru. Sisko sice stanici velí, ta ale patří obyvatelům nedalekého Bajoru, kteří o ochrannou přítomnost Hvězdné flotily požádali poté, co bajorští bojovníci za svobodu ukončili brutální cardassijskou okupaci své planety. Zhruba šestinu ze tří set stálých obyvatel stanice tvoří personál Hvězdné flotily, silně je zastoupena i bajorská milice. Zbytek jsou civilisté, z nichž většina pracuje na Promenádě, jakémsi krytém tržišti. Zpočátku měl Sisko od Hvězdné flotily za úkol chránit Bajor a stanici před každým nepřítelem, který by se v oblasti objevil. Objev nedaleké červí díry — zkratky vesmírem, která vede rovnou do neprobádaného kvadrantu Gamma — ale jeho úkol nesmírně rozšířil: z celé oblasti se stala brána pro nejrůznější návštěvníky, přátelské i krajně nepřátelské.
