Obyvatelé planety Thundera ji evakuují těsně předtím, než je zničena. V patách jim je skupina mutantů a ze všech únikových lodí přežije jediná. Zbyla jen hrstka Thunderanů (ThunderCats). S poloviční silou motorů musela skupina vedená Jagou nabrat kurz k nejbližší planetě. Jaga řídil loď, zatímco ostatních sedm leželo ve stázových tubusech. Na cestě k Třetí Zemi Jaga zemřel a loď tam havarovala. Skupina se brzy spřátelila s různými místními a navrhla si pevnost. Stálou hrozbou zůstává Mumm-Ra, staletí staré vtělení zla, spolu s mutanty, kteří zbytek Thunderanů zničili. Ale Lion-O, nový vůdce ThunderCats, má se svou zbraní „Mečem znamení“ šanci Thundercats udržet ve hře.
