Alice vychází z filmu Alice tady už nebydlí z roku 1975. Poté co její manžel Donald zahynul při nehodě kamionu, sbalila Alice Hyatt svého dvanáctiletého syna Tommyho, opustila domov v New Jersey a vyrazila do Hollywoodu. Snila o kariéře zpěvačky, jenže auto jí zůstalo stát v Phoenixu, a tak zatím nastoupila jako servírka v mastném bufetu Mel's Diner. Mel byl protivný, náročný a svým třem servírkám neustále poroučel. Zbylé dvě se zpočátku jmenovaly Flo a Vera. Flo byla jižanská krasavice lačnící po mužích, jejíž oblíbenou hláškou bylo „Kiss My Grits“. Vera byla naopak plachá, tichá a tak trochu, jak říkal Mel, „mimo“. Flo v roce 1980 odešla do vlastního seriálu a nahradila ji Belle, kterou později vystřídala Jolene.
