Christy je svobodná matka, která po letech pochybných rozhodnutí konečně nepije a snaží se dát život do pořádku. Denně ji zkouší její čerstvě střízlivá matka Bonnie, jež se snaží odčinit všechno, čím Christy zklamala. Náročné jsou i vztahy s vlastními dětmi. Dcera Violet je zasnoubená s mužem dvakrát starším a desetiletý syn Roscoe by radši bydlel u otce Baxtera, bývalého lenocha, který se teprve nedávno dal dohromady. Aby vydržela nepít, opírá se Christy o svůj podpůrný systém z Anonymních alkoholiků: svou patronku Marjorie, svou bohatou svěřenkyni Jill a přecitlivělou kamarádku Wendy. Christy se snaží zůstat pozitivní, přeprat svou minulost a vybudovat lepší budoucnost, ale s rozháranou rodinou a věčnými životními překážkami je to pořád boj do kopce.
